Weekly News May 25th - May 29th

Hello, Parents!  It is time to wrap up the school year!  Below you will find the last activities of the year.

5/26 - 10:30 Assembly - Magic in Science
5/29 - Spelling Bee - Just with room 14 - 5 finalists will compete against the rest of the third grade class on 6/1 
6/1 - Spelling Bee Finals - 5 finalists from each of the third grade classes will compete
6/1 - 6/4 - Dismissal is at 12:50
6/2 - Vacation to Mars - class play - dress rehearsal
6/3 - Play performances - all are invited - 9:00, 10:45, and 11:45
6/4 - 8:30 whiffle ball game 6th graders versus Mt. Washington Staff AND water balloon play.  We are asking for families to donate pre-filled water balloons.  Balloons should arrive in a cooler the morning of 6/4.  Please label your cooler so that it gets back to you.  Please let Anahata know if you are able to donate filled water balloons on the last day of school.  Thank you!
6/4 - The last report card will be sent home

Homework for the last two weeks of school will consist of:
1.  Read for 30 minutes or more each night
2.  Practice your spelling words for the Spelling Bee
3.  Practice/run your lines for the class play

It has been a pleasure to teach your children this year!  What a great bunch of students.  I will miss them!  Also, thank you for all of your support.  Your donations throughout the year of supplies and your time volunteering really make a difference!  You are fabulous!

Weekly News May 18th - May 24th


What are we learning this week?
  • Math -  Math on the Menu, Math Madness, prepare for fourth grade
  • Language Arts  - Story – Penguin Chick, Genre – nonfiction, skill – main idea/ details
  • Science/Social Studies/Health - We are done with rotations for the year.
  • Writing - Persuasive Writing
  • Spelling  - No more spelling packets.  We are done!  We will be preparing for the third grade spelling bee.  Please study on a nightly basis.  The spelling bee will be on Friday, May 29.  The finalists will compete on June 1st.
Please Note:
•  Recess will return to 10:00 – 10:20. 

    The last Science test will be on Friday, May 22.  The topic is Sun, Moon, and Earth.  A review sheet went home last Friday.  You can also access it online.

      5/18 – 5/21 – Scholastic Book Fair
      5/19 – Dismissal is at 2:30.  There are no more early dismissals on Tuesdays.
      5/21 – Open House – Please look for the invitation the students have prepared for you.

      Weekly News May 11th - May 15th


      What are we learning this week?
      • Math -  Math on the Menu, Math Madness, prepare for fourth grade
      • Language Arts  - We will begin a new theme about animals.  All stories will be related to animals.
      • Science/Social Studies/Health - Rotations are on Monday 5/11 and Wednesday 5/13
      • Writing - Persuasive Writing
      • Spelling  - No more spelling packets.  We are done!  We will be preparing for the third grade spelling bee.
      Please Note:
      •  Recess will be at 10:30 during SBAC Testing.  This is the last week Mt. Washington will be SBAC testing.  10:10 recess will resume on Monday, May 18. 

          Thank you to all who donated items for the tostada party.  It was a success because of your donations and our parent volunteers!  Thank you!


      • Thank you to Mary, Kyle’s mom, for leading us in our Mother’s Day card making.  We had a great time and made some beautiful cards!  


      • On Friday, May 15, Max’s mom will be coming into our class for an art project.  Thank you to all who donated money for the supplies.

          5/12 – Volunteer Tea in the MPR

          Weekly News May 4th - May 8th

          Reminders: 

          SBAC testing this week so no homework.

          Tostada Party on Friday the 8th
          To culminate our "Math on the Menu" unit, rooms 13, 14 and 15 will have a tostada party on Friday May 8th. Your child will not need to bring lunch on this day. Students will be invited to make their dream tostadas!

          We still need the following ingredients:

          Horchata
          Chicken
          Rice
          Beans
          Tostada shells

          We need volunteers;
          Set up - 11am - 11:30am
          Serve - 11:30am - 12:10pm
          Clean up - 12:10pm -12:30pm

          What are we learning this week?
          • Math -  Review for Smarter Balance, Math on the Menu, Math Madness
          • Language Arts  - Review for Smarter Balance
          • Science/Social Studies/Health - Rotations are on Monday 4/27, Wednesday 4/29, and Thursday 4/30
          • Writing - Persuasive Writing
          • Spelling  - Spelling packet and test are due on 4/30
          Please Note:
          •  Recess will be at 10:30 during SBAC Testing. 

              Kyle's mother, Mary, will be leading us in a craft on Friday, April 24.  Please look for the email of supplies needed for this project.  Thank you!

          • SBAC Testing is next week beginning on Monday 5/4 and ending on Thursday 5/7.  Please get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and be on time for school.

                  Weekly News April 13th - April 17th


                  What are we learning this week?
                  • Math  Envision CCSS Topic 14 – Area, Continue with Math Madness, review for SBAC (Smarter Balance test 5/4)
                  • Language Arts  - Story – Ramona and Her Father, Genre – Humor, skill – Problem and Solution
                  • Vocabulary Words -  anxious, cross, managed, alarmed, pretend, unfortunately
                  • Science/Social Studies/Health  Rotations are on Monday 4/13, Wednesday 4/15, and Thursday 4/16
                  • Geography - Clay map of the world  – painting 
                  • Spelling  - Spelling packet and test is due on 4/16
                  Please Note:
                  •  Thank you to our two parent chaperones, Kyle’s mom and August’s mom,  for the Placerita Canyon trip.  We had a great time!
                      March reading logs are due.  Please turn these in.
                  • On Monday 4/13, Mr. Aguirre will be the substitute teacher for room 14.  I will be on campus, but will be attending an all day training.
                  • Thank you to Kyle’s mom and Sevilla’s mom for mixing dough balls on Thursday.  Our clay maps look terrific!
                  • Thank you to Iman’s mother for photocopying for the third grade teachers.  We SO appreciate it
